Fog

    1. When foggy conditions are considered to be a possible or actual threat to patrons in an outdoor environment, the  following procedures are applicable.

Proactive planning
      1. Each facility/club must proactively monitor weather forecasts upcoming in the week ahead. Many locations have access to weather radar through the Bureau of Meteorology website (www.bom.gov.au) and Metservice (www.metservice.com) which can be useful for monitoring approaching upcoming fog activity. Facilities are responsible for developing a locally suitable communications plan for the management of fog risk.  It is recommended the potential  foggy conditions/tee time delays are communicated to visitors prior to visiting the  facility.

             Clear chain of command
5.1.2 Facility management engaged in outdoor activities are responsible for monitoring the weather conditions around them. Facility management have the authority to make a safety call and cease activities or move to a safer location. This may sometimes require firm insistence that patrons follow directions to move to safety. Where there is doubt about whether to continue with outdoor activities, the situation should be referred to the appropriate manager for a decision.

On Course Procedures
5.2 If a fog delay is required, no player is to tee off until the fog has suitably cleared. Visibility of 250m plus is an appropriate amount to restart play.
5.3 Once play can resume, the amount of time remaining until the afternoon field will be calculated. For 9-hole facilities, a shotgun start may be considered to clear the backlog of players (18 groups maximum). There should be no changes to the PM field post fog delay.

Management of high wind in an outdoor environment

Communication

      1. There must be an established mechanism for communicating the decision to suspend outdoor activities. This should include internal staff and patrons and other staff who may be affected (e.g. a person in the proshop who may not hear the storm approaching) and management. Each facility/club must have a procedure in place such that staff know where to take patrons until the “all clear” is given.

Extreme heat

The extreme heat policy process and compliance requirements are set out in the table below. Varying actions are to be taken depending on the ambient temperature level. It is recommended that activities involving a high level of exertion or involving high risk groups, be scheduled outside the hottest part of the day (11:00am - 3:00pm) especially from November – March.
